Food Allergy Plan For School

Food Allergy Plan For School

When my daughter went to school with food allergies I was so nervous!

How would her teacher be able to keep her safe from her allergens when they would be everywhere; and there were so many kids?

I decided that if this was going to happen I needed to ask some serious questions and make sure she is safe.

So I made a list of things to ask.  A few things I asked were:

-Who provides the snacks?

-Do they know about cross-contact and how to avoid it?

-Are they able to omit my daughter’s allergens from the snacks?

-Do they understand what a reaction looks like and how to use epinephrine?

-Where would the epinephrine be kept so it’s easily accessible?

I felt pretty good about my questions at the time, but I have to say that I was missing so many important things!

As the school years went on (going on our 12th year now), I kept a template of the questions I asked each year.  Each year when there was a problem, I would add to the template or re-word the questions so they would be more clear.

504 for food allergies

I now have a thorough template that has 12 years of experience behind it.  And yes, it keeps getting better and better because it’s a working document that I still use and improve every year (So if you’ve bought it in the past, I’ve likely upgraded it since then).

This food allergy plan for school is not by itself a 504 plan for food allergies, BUT it will give you a thorough starting point so you don’t have to do the research yourself.

How great is that?

Now, when I go to our teacher meeting every September, I’m confident that I’m not missing anything.  I know that the teacher will be in a mindset of cooperation because they won’t be overwhelmed with information or feel like I’m demanding.  I’m confident that the school year will start off right and only get better.
